In 2008, the China Medical Board is launching a fresh initiative to strengthen scientific excellence in “critical capacities” among Chinese and Asian institutions to address the premier health challenges of the 21st century — equitable access to primary and preventive health services in market-driven economies so that all can access and benefit from the advancement of knowledge. This will entail capacity strengthening in the fields of health policy, health systems, and the associated research and educational activities to advance equity in health in China and Asia.

CMB grant support have been devoted to capacity strengthening of schools of medicine, nursing, and public health.

Historically, CMB programs have focused on medical education and research building capacity in schools of medicine, nursing, and public health. This focus was well imprinted during its first 36 years of support to establishing and strengthening the Peking Union Medical College 1914-1950. In the past 57 years, CMB has continued to strengthen education and research in medical universities throughout Asia, including its return to China in 1981. In 2007, CMB provides support to 26 universities in China, Mongolia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, and Nepal.

Program emphases have been shaped by grantee priorities according to the stage of development of medical universities. In the past decade, significant CMB efforts were invested in medical education; and in the preceding decade, medical research was prioritized. Nursing and public health received consistent support throughout these periods.
