Second West Lake Forum on Health Policy in China
February 10, 2009

The Second West Lake Forum on Health Policy in China — funded by the CMB and hosted by Zhejiang Medical University — was conducted in Hangzhou China on February 8-10, 2009. Engaging more than 100 health leaders from China, including Vice-Chairman of the People's Congress Professor Han Qide and senior leaders from the Ministry of Health and China's medical universities, the Forum brought together academics and policy-makers to share knowledge, analysis, and experiences on the Forum theme: Healthy China 2020. An opening session was presided by former Vice-Minister Professor Wang Longde, a welcoming was offered by President Yang Wei of Zhejiang University, and keynote speeches were offered by Professor Bill Hsiao of Harvard and Professor Li Ling of Peking University.
Seven panel sessions were conducted with lead off speakers followed by commentators on such themes as (1) enhancing public systems; (2) improving health service systems; (3) international experiences; (4) improving health care financing; (5) towards universal coverage and security; (6) drug and medical technology; (7) monitoring and evaluation.
A special aspect of the Forum was the inclusion of a dozen "young scholars" from around the world, who fully participated in all sessions. At the Forum dinner, Professors Jordan Cohen and Jane Henney, members of an international selection committee, announced and awarded the CMB Distinguished Professorship awards to 10 outstanding medical leaders in China's leading universities.
